8 little things about Chile

bandera-chilena

1. Hand lotion
Chilean women love hand lotion. They share it at the office. Have it on them at all times.
It makes sense considering that the Chilean climate is very dry in Santiago and up north and down south the cold can kill any pair of hands.
2. Going to different stores
If you live nearby one of the gigantic stores such as Easy or Jumbo it can be quite easy to find one little specific thing. But otherwise you may have to go to 10 different tiny stores to find what you are looking for - especially in the country side.
3. Good drivers
Chileans really know how to drive. Whenever you feel that somebody is going to hit you, they always manage to break last-minute. The time needed to break in Chile is considerably shorter than in northern Europe - you drive until you stop.
4. Chileans walk slowly
Overtaking somebody on the sidewalk can be a challenge when everybody walks slower than snails and makes it impossible to pass.
They drive fast but walk slowly. Maybe they drive fast because it takes them forever to walk to their car.
5. Whatsapp = God
Where all communication takes place.
Also known as whazzap, whasap, watsap etc..
They even have a radio program called "Sin Wazzap" in RegiĆ³n de Los Lagos.
6. Plastic bag hording
The overlying question is: where do the millions of plastic bags end up?
Also, it is quite amazing how many different sizes and colors there are.
7. Native English speakers from Germany, France and Denmark? Say what?
Never have I ever been referred to as a native English speaker (together with other Europeans).
Maybe partly because the "native level" is not quite as literal as when used in other contexts.
So, come to Chile and meet and the native English speakers from Germany. Hell yeah!
8. If you can boil an egg - you're a masterchef
A common question to be asked is: do you know how to cook?
Considering that eating out (of some ind) is very common in Chile it does not take much to be in possession of advanced cooking skills. Yay for that.
